A journey into the wildness and majesty of the Dolomite mountains in northern Italy. Jagged peaks, emerald alpine lakes, green valleys and rustic huts.

WHAT MAKES THIS TRIP SPECIAL AND

DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?

  • Our guide has been running photo tours to Italy and in particular Dolomites at least 4 times a year since 2012. There should be no language difficulties as one of your guides is a native Italian.
  • Our knowledge of the Dolomites region enables us to take you to the premier locations to capture the best photos.
  • Photography is always our priority: the program and the travel times have been designed to minimise the amount of travel, allowing more time to shoot and to compare and analyse the results of our shoots with the tutors and the other participants.
  • Two photographic experts will be by your side at all times to help you achieve the best possible photographs. In addition to improving your shooting and post-production techniques. You will also learn, weather permitting, how to take great pictures of the Milky Way and Startrails.
  • Logistical organization is provided by Punto Viaggio Tour Operator, specialized in photography travel with decades of experience and hundreds of organized trips around the world. They provide insurance cover, the legal guarantees required and the continuous and direct assistance in the event of unforeseen circumstances… peace of mind.

LOCATIONS AND SCHEDULE OF THE TOUR

On this tour we will explore some of the most outstanding locations in the Dolomites mountains in northern Italy: magnificent peaks like the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Pale di San Martino, the beautiful alpine lakes of Carezza and Braies, green valleys nestling below majestic mountains and rustic huts where we might even sleep. Everyday you’ll encounter wonderful scenery and thanks to our experience and knowledge we will take you to the best locations and help you take extraordinary pictures.

Beautiful landscapes you will see and shoot

These are some samples of the pictures you’ll be able to shoot during this tour.

SCHEDULE

Our Photo Tour takes place at a time of year when the beautiful light of this region, although not guaranteed is at it’s most reliable, which will hopefully enable us to capture stunning images.

The sunrise is at approximately 5:20 am and the sunsets at 21:00. This gives us time to explore every location and choose the desired shooting vantage point as well as enough night hours to concentrate on one of the focuses of the tour, shooting the Milky Way and startrails.

Due to the early hours we will only shoot 2-3 sunrises during the tour. All shooting sessions are optional: if you do not wish to attend you may enjoy the time as you wish.

Day 1

Arrival, Baita Segantini and Pale di San Martino

On your first day in Italy, we’ll meet you at 12:00 in the arrival hall of Venice Marco Polo airport. Our tour operator will help you find the best solution for travel and will give you all the information you need to reach the meeting point.

Once together we will drive for approximately 2h 30 mins to Passo Rolle (1.984 m), where we’ll shoot the famous Baita Segantini and Pale di San Martino (3.192 m) at sunset.

After sunset we’ll drive for a few minutes to our hotel and have typical alpine dinner.

Accommodation: Passo Rolle

Day 2

Cinque Torri and Lagazuoi

On the second day of your Photo Tour, we will leave the hotel after breakfast and move to the Cinque Torri area (2.361 m), a beautiful group of rocks near Passo Falzarego. There are many remnants of World War I left by Italian troops in this area, it is often called an open air museum.

We’ll have the opportunity to shoot this little mountain and visit the trenches, then we’ll have lunch at Rifugio Scoiattoli, a charming hut right at the feet of the Cinque Torri.

After lunch we’ll take a cablecar up to the top of Mount Lagazuoi (2.750 m) which commands an incredible view over the surrounding mountains and valleys. One of the highlights of the whole tour is the opportunity and privilege of sleeping in the hut at the summit of Mount Lagazuoi. This won’t be an uncomfortable accommodation, as we’ll have private rooms instead of beds in the dormitory. In addition to this, the Rifugio Lagazuoi has one of the best cuisines in the Alps and it also features the highest sauna in the Dolomites!

Overnighting at Rifugio Lagazuoi will allow us to shoot the last rays of the setting sun from 2.750 m over the Dolomites, resulting in an incredible opportunity to take stunning shots.

After the dinner we’ll assess the sky and if the conditions are good out we’ll shoot the Milky way and startrails.

Accommodation: Rifugio Lagazuoi (2.750 m)

Day 3

Lagazuoi, Misurina Lake, Antorno Lake and Tre Cime di Lavaredo

This day will start early (for those willing), about one hour before dawn, we’ll photograph the sun’s first rays hitting the peaks of the mountains.

After a great sunrise session we’ll have a continental breakfast at the hut and some time to rest and pack our things up before moving to the next location.

We’ll descend with by cablecar and we’ll drive via a road with panoramic views to Misurina Lake and the beautiful Antorno Lake, only 30 km away.

We’ll have a quick lunch on the lakeshore and purchase some sandwiches to take away, which will be our dinner.

After lunch we’ll move by car to Rifugio Auronzo (2.320 m), where we’ll park and proceed on foot for 1,5 hours, an easy hike, to get to famous Rifugio Locatelli (2.450 m) in front of Three Sisters (Tre Cime). We’ll ltry and find the best vantage point and wait for the sun to set over the Tre Cime, the Piani Lakes and Mount Paterno.

Immediately after sunset we’ll begin the walk back to our car, to make the most of the remaining light before darkness falls. Our dinner tonight will be an unglamorous sandwich and some fruit, our return to civilization will be past restaurant serving times.

The drive back to the hotel will take a few minutes and we can all enjoy a well-deserved rest.

Accommodation: Misurina Lake

Day 4

Braies Lake and Val di Funes

Today after breakfast we will drive for half an hour to Lake Braies, a wonderful lake, one of the most iconic spots in the Dolomite mountains. Its emerald waters are usually calm in the morning, which is great for photography. We will explore the shores of the lake or you can hire a rowing boat if you fancy a more relaxing morning.

Lunch will be at a great restaurant near the lake and then we’ll travel to Val di Funes, a picturesque alpine valley with cozy houses and famous churches. From here we can take a short walk to visit several interesting locations at the foot of the Odle mountains (needle mountains) (3.025 m) before shooting the last rays of the sun on the mountain peaks.

After dinner we will have a new opportunity to photograph the stars. The moon can be bright here, hopefully bright enough to light up the foreground, creating beautiful imagery.

Accommodation: Val di Funes

Day 5

Val di Funes and Departure

Your last day in the beautiful Dolomite mountains, will start by shooting at dawn in the hills. The fir trees and huts and hopefully a little morning mist can provide great images.

After breakfast when you luggage is packed we will drive for about 3 hours to the Marco Polo Airport in Venice and should arrive around 14:00. This is where the tour ends. We hope you have great memories and fantastic photographs.

Schedule

Our Photo Tour takes place at a time when the light has a beautiful soft quality, which enables stunning images to be taken.

The sunrise is at approximately 5:20 am and the sunsets at 21:00. This gives us time to explore every location and choose the desired shooting vantage point as well as enough night hours to concentrate on one of the focuses of the tour, shooting the Milky Way and startrails.

We won’t shoot more than 1-2 sunrises due to the early timing, anyway all shooting sessions are optional: if you do not want to go out early to photograph at sunrise or you prefer not to go out at night, you can stay at the hotel until our return.

PHOTOS AND TESTIMONIALS ABOUT THIS TOUR

It was a really great experience. I learned new techniques and refreshed some old ones. Excellent organization, in particular I found the time spent in the classroom reviewing participant’s photos very useful. The instructors were well prepared and always at hand to help. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them and the other participants.

The workshop was organized very well: the choice of locations, the classroom sessions and feedback on our photos were great. The instructors are very talented and were always available to interact with participants, solve problems and give direction.

Wonderful experience, both technically and personally. Not to mention the gastronomic aspect! I spent four days devoted entirely to my greatest passion, in the places I love the most and in the company of people who think exactly like me … that’s the magic of this workshop that’s its winning formula. I think I learned a lot, had fun, but there is still room for improvement so I hope to repeat soon.

I had a great experience; both for the choice of location and the group were really great. It was a lot of fun and the organizers were really very good and professional. Even though I had limited experience with digital cameras (only a year) I found it easy to follow the course because the organizers explained very well if I didn’t understand. They helped smoothly and comprehensively and were happy to re-explain the most difficult concepts. A completely positive experience. Thank you!

Wonderful experience in a fantastic location. The workshop was prepared and organized in a manner nothing short of impeccable. The teachers were very prepared and always extremely helpful in answering any request, requirement or question from all participants. Definitely an experience to be repeated, and one that I would recommend to all fans of photography.

This was my first workshop. It as all very nice; wonderful places, a great group of people with whom it was easy to get along and two great tutors. I think I will repeat the experience when work commitments will allow me. Thanks for everything.

A really interesting workshop with lots of shooting sessions, the teachers are very clever and very pleasant. The group discussions reviewing the images we had taken the day before were very useful. I would recommend everyone to participate in future workshops.

I attended your workshop. The course is a bit like chewing a Fruit Pastille … as soon as you have finished chewing you always want another. I have a list of your courses and workshops that I intend to take. I am always satisfied by your professionalism and the clarity of your explanations. Thanks a lot for (yet another) wonderful experience …

The workshop was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. The instructors, as well as being smart professionals are really sympathetic and friendly people. They manage to immediately create a nice atmosphere with the group and were never‘snooty professors’. When you’re with people who love what they do their enthusiasm is contagious. Having two people to guide, correct and explain the technical side of photography was, needless to say, a great help. My first Vista Photo Tours workshop…and not my last. Thanks
