The Island of the Eternal Spring – Madeira

Your photo guide will be waiting for you on arrival, and we’ll settle straight into our hotel on the north coast of the island, ideally located close to many photo spots.

After check-in, we’ll head out for our first sunset photo session at one of the area’s many scenic viewpoints, getting a feel for Madeira’s dramatic coastal light and landscape photography techniques from day one.

Madeira is still largely undiscovered by mass tourism, and many of its photo spots don’t carry famous names — yet they hold enormous photographic potential, as you’ll soon see. Every photo you’ve seen from this trip was taken in these exact locations, in this same season, under these same conditions.
Each day, your guide studies the forecast and reads the sky to put you in the best possible position for outstanding shots.

Dinner will be at one of our favorite local restaurants, where you’ll taste the best of Madeiran cuisine.

We’ve also factored in tide levels at every coastal stop, so we’re always shooting at exactly the right moment for the best close-ups.

Thanks to Madeira’s variety of subjects and mild climate, we’ll often shoot throughout the day as well, not only at the classic golden hours — meaning you’ll come home with an incredible number of memorable images.

Our sunrise session takes place at the spectacular Ponta de São Lourenço, followed by breakfast and a short rest at the hotel.

We’ll then drive to Porto da Cruz (9 km, 10 min) to photograph the striking rock formations of the bay, dominated by a massive sea stack, before visiting the island’s only rum distillery for a taste of local products.

The afternoon is spent climbing Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak at 1,862 m (6,109 ft). A gentle 30-minute walk on an easy path leads to one of the island’s most unusual sights, a forest of bare white trees, where we’ll shoot until sunset.

Those who want more can continue another 30 minutes to the summit, where a sea of clouds glows beneath them in the warm evening light.

We’ll wrap up with a picnic or a relaxed dinner nearby, depending on the group’s mood, and weather permitting, an optional night session for the Milky Way or star trails — Madeira’s vast, unlit landscape and this season’s ideal moon conditions make it a superb spot for night photography.

Sunrise and night sessions are always optional, and you decide in the moment whether to join in or rest.

Breakfast and rest follow back at the hotel, and mid-morning a short drive brings us to Queimadas, a lush forest park, where vibrant hydrangeas, a mountain stream and a picturesque hut tucked into the greenery await our lenses.

After lunch we’ll return to Pico do Arieiro for the afternoon and sunset session, capturing a mountain landscape so dramatic it’s easy to forget you’re on a small island in the middle of the Atlantic.

The evening closes with a picnic or dinner nearby, and, weather permitting, either a night session or a relaxed review of the day’s shots with your guide, discussing composition and post-processing.

Once back at the hotel for breakfast and rest, we’ll visit the classic triangular houses of Santana before driving along the coast (30 km, 40 min) toward the next stretch of the island, stopping for lunch at a fantastic seaside restaurant known for its fresh fish and generous portions.

We’ll then check into our hotel for the next 4 nights and spend the afternoon exploring some of the area’s most interesting spots, closing the day with a sunset session in Porto Moniz natural pools.

Dinner follows at one of our favorite local spots, and the evening is yours: a night session if conditions allow, or a relaxed moment reviewing photos over a glass of poncha, Madeira’s traditional drink made with aguardente, orange juice and honey.

The late morning is spent exploring some of the area’s finest coastal and mountain viewpoints, with lunch at a typical local restaurant along the way.

As the afternoon draws on, we’ll head into the famous Fanal Forest, the largest laurel forest in the world. The low clouds that often drift through here create a genuinely enchanted, fairy-tale atmosphere among the twisted trees, with near-endless compositions to explore — we’ll spend several hours shooting until sunset.

The evening is open: a night session, a group photo review, or simply a drink and good conversation.

Back at the hotel for breakfast and rest, the late morning brings something special: a scenic cable-car ride down to one of the island’s “fajãs,” small cultivated plots — often banana groves — tucked beneath towering cliffs. An organic farm and a great restaurant right on the beach await us here, perfect for a relaxed lunch to the sound of the waves.

We’ll ride back up in the afternoon and drive to our sunset location: Miradouro Pico da Murta, one of the area’s finest viewpoints.
From here, we’ll take in panoramic views over the rugged mountains and the verdant São Vicente valley, with the Atlantic Ocean as a stunning backdrop.
The changing light at sunset often creates dramatic contrasts between the illuminated peaks and the shadows filling the valley below, offering fantastic photographic opportunities.

Once rested, we’ll head toward the capital, Funchal, a picturesque town home to the colorful Mercado dos Lavradores, packed with tropical fruit and vegetables grown right on the island, where we’ll have lunch surrounded by local specialties.

We’ll then head out for a sunset session at Ponta de São Lourenço, a new viewpoint on this dramatic promontory where lush tropical vegetation gives way to arid terrain shaped by constant wind.

Our final dinner of the trip follows at an excellent restaurant in Machico, a charming fishing village.
